At a Deaf Tradeshow

The grumbling beginnings of a new movement reared its ugly head as lobby rats protested the new fees imposed by the deaf tradeshow to stand in the lobby and chat. "We'd like to encourage our guests to join in the events and enjoy the many fun and entertaining things we provide," a spokesperson for the parent company commented. A protester who declined to provide her name angrily stated, "We [lobby rats] put ourselves at an inconvenience to be here and chat! People are coming all over and we'd like to visit with our friends. What we do has been done for centuries at shows, it's practically an honored profession." Cheers of agreement. "It isn't easy being a lobby rat, there's often no food and drink, and no place to sit! Why, Charles here once came home with an infected bunion!" Charles nods solemnly, holding a sign. 'Only Losers Go In.'

"I'm addicted to the I Love You sign. See my shirt," gushed a showgoer. "I've got the bags, the hat. The tradeshow's loaded with them. See, even the undies--" A tap on the shoulder, averting near-disaster. "What? -- *gasp* *high-pitched shriek* Solid gold I Love You necklaces?! Where?! Nicetalkingwithyoubye--"

Several booths were lined up, books littering the tabletops. A husband and wife stop to leaf through the stacks, the wife turning aside. "Look at those titles. The Heartbreaking Work of Growing Up Deaf. I Never Heard the Birds Sing. Blind and Deaf, The Story of a Young Boy Afflicted With a Crushing Affliction. Earthshattering Miracles: The Life of an Extraordinary Ordinary Woman." She puts down a book. "I'd really like to move on, but my husband has to have just one more."
