Dear Editors:
The article by Douglass Bullard is refreshing on multiple levels for me and I am thrilled to see such works as this come about. I grew up with a lot of strict, proper English, and still do speak like I write. Reason for this is two-fold: parents nagging to "practice good speech" and the fact that I love English and creative writing. As a recent Gallaudet graduate, I have taken a Deaf Studies course and thoroughly enjoy it. There was a discussion at one point in what exactly makes printed ASL (if there is ever a possibility). Douglass points out a thoughtful point: why not just accept the vernacular of an imaginary signing person over the strict adherence to rules of English and this will be a telling example of crossing over among Deaf peers who can clarify for hearing. Since Gallaudet, I've toned down my proper English when I send out socialized text/email messages and yet, practice vigorously in creative writing. Hopefully with years to come I'll have a much better understanding of the separation of proper to socially acceptable languages.

Dear Editors:
I really enjoyed Pamela Witcher's work, especially "Hitler, Bell and Ling
in Disguise." It motivated me to seek out her website and look at some of
the other things she has done. Patti Durr's explanation of Ling was
helpful in interpreting the work, since I was ignorant of the reference.
