about

John and Adrean Clark

Clerc Scar seeks to bring the cultural treasures of the signing community to the reading public. Deaf writers and artists have produced work of the highest quality for over two centuries now, but very little of it has reached beyond the deaf world. We offer appealing and affordable books that aim to, above all, entertain and captivate.

The name Clerc Scar comes from the signing community’s most cherished historical figures: Laurent Clerc. He was a deaf teacher who left his native France in 1816 to help found America’s first school for the deaf. His name sign indicates a scar on his cheek caused by a fall into a fireplace when he was a boy. “Scar” is also a reference to the sign that means “My mind was scarred, but in a good way!”

The publishers of Clerc Scar are the deaf-blind poet John Lee Clark and the deaf cartoonist Adrean Clark. John is the author of the chapbook Suddenly Slow: Poems and he edited the groundbreaking anthology Deaf American Poetry.
